St. Charles Avenue Residence
New Orleans, LA
When the homeowners purchased this property in 2013, the house had been divided into multiple apartments. They approached Albert Architecture to rehabilitate the historic 1895 structure, return it to a single-family home, and restore its original beauty. Every aspect of the home was renovated. Where possible, the original details such as windows, doors, and plaster moldings were painstakingly restored. New elements, appropriate for the style and period, were added to replace missing or damaged features. All new mechanical, plumbing, and HVAC systems were installed, along with a state-of-the-art lighting and AV control system. Albert Architecture worked closely with the interior designers, Nelson Wilson Interiors, to ensure a cohesive relationship between the architectural details and interior furnishings and fixtures.
A dilapidated one-story garage at the rear of the property was transformed into a new stucco two-story carriage house, which required both HDLC approval and a zoning variance. Albert Architecture coordinated with landscape architects Alvarez Basik to ensure the new carriage house and renovated main house structure flowed seamlessly with the landscaping. The landscape design includes mature trees, new plantings, water features, reclaimed antique stone pavers, and a secret garden. These elements integrated into the uniquely shaped site and appear as though they were original to the house.
